The two Bodycote laboratories at Shotton primarily serve the needs of Corus Strip Products, providing vital support services in an out-sourced environment.
Testing services are available to external customers, supported and supplemented by the global Bodycote laboratory network, especially by the near-by North West laboratory in Salford, Manchester.
The assets of the two laboratories were purchased by Bodycote on 13th June 1999, and certain staff transferred to Bodycote employment simultaneously. Bodycote has a term contract to provide services to Corus.
The former Central laboratory undertakes a wide range of analytical tests using ICP and wet techniques. In particular, the laboratory tests process fluids and materials and discharges to the environment. A supporting metallurgical section undertakes process development, failure analysis (using SEM) and product appraisals. Sophisticated weathering equipment is available to test paint finishes for automotive and other applications.
The Cold Mill laboratory is a 24 hour per day, 7 days per week operation. It undertakes quality control tests on steel strip, performing several hundred tensile tests each day. A robotic tensile testing unit provides a high degree of testing automation and the results are fed automatically into the Corus computer system.
Bodycote is continuing to expand and develop the two laboratories.
