Last month our very own Cliff Topper headed to the United States for the 44th annual Turbomachinery and Pump Symposium in Houston, Texas. Whilst in the country, Cliff managed to squeeze in visits to suppliers in Las Vegas, Chicago and Grand-Rapids. Read on for more info from Cliff’s insightful trip.

 

There was a lot to learn on the trip. We were alarmed to find how badly the oil and gas industry has been affected by the low crude oil price. This has caused a knock-on effect across the industry, with pumps and allied equipment sales down as a result. In Las Vegas, AquaPump were invited to the Ingersoll Rand ARO sales conference, since we are Gold Level DVP Distributors. ARO is a company that invests a lot of money into research and development, ensuring they stay on the cutting edge.

 

 

From Vegas, the next stop was Chicago to visit Flowserve Innomag. This company is really innovative and we believe they have the best magnetic drive pump on the market. We next headed to Grand Rapids, Michigan to visit the home of Blackmer (you can read more info on the brand here, as they are our featured brand for November). There was a lot of discussion on product development, as well as a tour of their factory. The facility has been upgraded to accommodate the new LB942 compressors. Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan.

 

 

Coming away from the trip, we learnt that the Americans are coming up with more efficient ways to manufacture and that as a result of this, the Asian brands have much less of a hold on the market than before, with their advantage as low as 5%.

 

 

It was truly a rewarding experience. Being able to catch up with colleagues in the industry, visiting the Venetian Resort and Casino for ARO’s conference, touring Blackmer’s factory and “catching the rugby in Chicago” were some of the main highlights of the trip. Says Cliff, “It is always good to keep up with latest technology, as well as to maintain and build relationships with suppliers.”
